TRICARE insurance is a healthcare program that offers addiction treatment coverage for military service members and their families.

TRICARE Insurance

TRICARE, formerly known as the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services, is the supplemental healthcare program for active and retired military service members and their families. TRICARE is a program of the United States Department of Defense Military Health System and includes coverage for individuals of the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Commission Core, U.S. Public Health Service, and Commission Core of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.

In 2017, TRICARE made massive changes to their mental health benefits, which now includes coverage for addiction treatment. The health insurance expansion included treatment for opioid addiction and other substance abuse issues. Drug and alcohol abuse has always been an ongoing problem for members of the United States Military, and these changes have continued to help active duty and retired service members who are struggling with addiction.

TRICARE may cover the following services:

  • Inpatient services
  • Detoxification
  • Intensive outpatient programs
  • Intervention programs
  • Medication-assisted treatment
  • Family therapeutic services
  • Partial hospitalization programs
  • Residential treatment

Does TRICARE Cover Drug or Alcohol Rehab?

TRICARE health insurance does typically cover drug and alcohol rehab treatment. If you are in need of TRICARE substance abuse treatment, you are eligible for coverage at a wide range of treatment programs, including American Addiction Centers. TRICARE is accepted at many treatment facilities, but TRICARE rehab coverage does depend upon the specific provider at hand, the member’s specific health plan, and a few other variables.

Does TRICARE Cover Drug and Alcohol Detox?

TRICARE plans provide coverage for several types of drug and alcohol detox.1 Having TRICARE inpatient coverage does not mean you will be immediately covered fully for drug and alcohol detox. Detox centers that take TRICARE may require you to pay partial fees based on your specific insurance plan, or get the authorization and recommendation of a doctor. For example, many insurance plans require that you meet certain criteria for admission to an inpatient detox program. TRICARE may determine that you can successfully be detoxed on an outpatient basis.
